Enjoy a day lost at sea at the Museu Marítim de Barcelona

Visita Virtual 3D invites visitors to explore one of the world’s rarest naval collections.

Located within a medieval shipyard, the Museu Marítim de Barcelona (MMB) is a sight to behold in and of itself.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Spain ruled the Mediterranean, pioneering new and innovative naval technologies along the way. And, although some of the country’s oldest ships and artifacts have been lost to time, the MMB’s collection still spans hundreds of years, including pieces ranging from a ship that still sails, a steam engine, and even a 14th-century manuscript. However, the museum is also home to everything one may expect to find in a maritime museum: binnacles, anchors, navigational tools, and more.

For decades, the MMB has gathered artifacts documenting the nation’s maritime past, a heritage that reminds visitors of the lives of seafarers as well as the country’s history in peacetime and war. Unfortunately, due to the fragile nature of some of the museum’s oldest artifacts, access to many of these unique pieces has been restricted to the public.

However, with the help of Visita Virtual 3D, those restrictions are being lifted.

Recently, we said “ahoy” to Eduard Puig, project manager at Visita Virtual 3D, and learned more about his team’s experience capturing this one-of-a-kind museum

What inspired the 3D capture of this space?

This project was a challenge for us as it was the largest project we had ever undertaken. The experience of being able to work at night in a museum like this and being on your own to enjoy the experience of watching the Virtual Tour grow was great.

What are the “must-sees” you want visitors to explore and why?

One of the most incredible points that we can offer to the visitors is to be able to visit the gallery because it is not open to the public due to conservation-based restrictions. For us to be able to show these spaces is a privilege.

What’s the one thing you want visitors to take away after exploring your 3D tour?

First of all, the cultural sector has been hit hard by the pandemic. Our intention is to help this sector as much as possible. Also to make known the history of the city of Barcelona, and through the tour, be able to show an experience and help promote visits.

"Matterport is a TOP product, we never stop surprising ourselves in every project we do. When you finish one, you can't wait to start another one because it offers many options that visitors can then enjoy."

Do you have any plans to capture more 3D experiences?

Yes, we are always looking for ways to help to enhance all sectors and make things easier for our customers through Matterport! Real estate, cultural heritage, and more!

Anything else you would like to add?

Finally, thank you for being able to show our work and help to educate the population in the field of virtual tours!
